Further Information
If you are reading this on your phone or laptop on the tube, bus, or train, you are in fine company with some of our managers; whose first interaction with Peterborough was very much the same — travelling home from a typical day supporting vulnerable young people in London, the Home Counties or one of the authorities bordering Peterborough.
Like you, they were part of a successful team delivering significant and impactful outcomes for children in their area, but after looking at house prices in Peterborough, they realised a move could afford them the chance to finally buy their dream home — whilst helping progress their career more quickly.
Those that made that move, have since been promoted within their early years with Peterborough City Council (PCC). Some were on the property ladder already, but Peterborough offered them the chance to significantly upsize.
Better still is the relocation support package on offer (subject to meeting a few criteria such as currently living 25 miles or more from our office and moving to within 25 miles of the workplace), which includes the possibility for removal, storage and legal expenses, disturbance allowance and a lodging allowance for up to six months.
As for the role itself, you might be aware that in 2023 Peterborough’s Children’s Services was adjudged to require improvement — but within that report it was highlighted that children in need of protection, and those with more complex needs, receive appropriate support from the family safeguarding teams. And for most children, it was highlighted that risks and needs are identified, and interventions are provided at the right level.
But we always want to improve and expand the Family Safeguarding team, ensuring we keep caseloads at a manageable level and for that reason, we are recruiting. If your interest has been piqued, read on to see if you could be a fit.
You are a qualified social worker, with demonstrable experience of supervising a team within a safeguarding context and current knowledge of legislation and statutory guidance, especially within child protection and the court process.
You foster teams with a high-performance mentality; supporting your social workers to show commitment to their work and a deep understanding of young people, and the risks presented.
You are the type of manager that enjoys being on the frontline with your team, supporting five to six social workers, acting as their sounding board, but within the flexibility of a nine-day fortnight.
You are excited by the idea of working for a city authority where, unlike other counties and districts, you can manage your caseload within close geographical proximity (with a central court in walking distance of your office) – making best use of your time and helping support your work-life balance.
You want to join a department lead by a transformational leader, like the new Executive Director of Children and Young People's Services – John Gregg – who joined Peterborough City Council in July 2023, with a remit to take Peterborough on a dramatic improvement journey, as he did previously with Coventry City Council.
If you want to be a part of our transformation, with the chance to work within a Family Safeguarding Model with low caseloads, click “apply” to share your details with us and we promise to respond quickly.
This is a rolling campaign, and we will review applications daily so please don’t wait for the closing date to apply. Candidates will be progressed shortly after they apply, and the opportunity will be filled as soon as we identify a suitable candidate, which may be before the closing date. So please don’t hesitate, apply today.
