Further Information
Peterborough City Council has declared a climate emergency and committed to become a net zero organisation by 2030 and to support Peterborough to become a net zero city.

Peterborough has a Local Area Energy Plan, outlining the activities needed to be delivered across the city to enable Peterborough to become net zero. The plan details the requirement for decarbonisation projects, in excess of £8.8bn, ranging from retrofitting, installing low carbon heating, rooftop solar panels and electric vehicle charging points, developing district heat networks and increasing renewable electricity generation. The vast scale of this opportunity demonstrates the need to develop viable delivery plans to ensure that the outlined projects can be realised.

Peterborough City Council leads the Peterborough Accelerated Net Zero (PANZ) project, a £3.2m project, funded by Innovate UK. The PANZ project will develop IT tools, and the supporting decision-making framework, to assist councils to identify, manage and deliver portfolios of decarbonisation projects. The tools will utilise social, demographic and economic data to tailor delivery plans and associated financial mechanisms and engagement strategies to each project and community.

The project will conduct research into engagement and finance mechanisms and apply these to two demonstrator projects (expansion of a district heat network and installation of heat pumps in rural homes). Significant stakeholder and community engagement will be undertaken to support this. The tool will also enable projects to be prioritised based on the delivery of decarbonisation and other co-benefits as selected by the council, and facilitate the management of portfolios of projects. It is expected that the tool will result in the development of multiple business cases for city-wide projects that will accelerate decarbonisation in Peterborough.

The successful candidate will research engagement methodologies and apply learnings to lead the development of the engagement framework. They will plan and deliver a comprehensive stakeholder engagement strategy. They will join an innovative Climate Change team, supported by strong collaborating partners and will have the opportunity to shape the development of the project and help enhance future decarbonisation in the city.

The successful post holder will have a passion for sustainability with proven engagement skills. It will be critical for the post holder to build strong relationships with communities.

Peterborough is a unique combination of a New Town with a historic medieval core that has ambitious plans for the future. It is currently experiencing considerable investment in the city centre, including the opening of the University campus, along with the growth of new urban extensions on the edge of the city. Plans to revitalise the train station quarter will offer a positive welcome for every visitor.

Located on the East Coast Main Line and having an enviable cycleway network, you are able to travel to and around Peterborough in a sustainable way. We wear our green credentials proudly and are committed to projects to ensure that Peterborough becomes a net zero carbon city.

Our smart offices are based at Fletton Quays and we can accommodate a high level of remote working due to a paperless, agile working framework. The successful candidate will benefit from a flexible working practice, cycle to work scheme, options to purchase extra annual leave and staff discounts as well as a generous local government pension.
